Grand Prix In Austin, Patek phillipes supercomplication. Today is a very big day for us Patek phillipes supercomplication Philippe lovers — it is the day that this great Genevan company will unveil its celebratory timepieces for its th birthday. I am in Geneva to cover this at length when the curtain lifts later tonight, but before we get to that, I thought today was as good a day as any to show you a little something special.
I've seen the first Grand Complication ever made by Patek Philippeand more than a few mega-timepieces owned by the most important timepiece collector in historyNew York banker Henry Graves Jr. But the one dream watch that I been able to touch in the metal was in fact the dreamiest
Patek phillipes supercomplication them all — the Henry Graves Jr.
Patek Philippe Supercomplication, the most important and expensive watch on the planet. But late this summer, that changed. Another watch hasn't hit half that amount since. And it is because of its ownership that I wasn't, until this day in July, certain that I would ever see it in the metal in my life. You see the watch doesn't to the Patek Philippe Museum, it belongs to a private family — the Qatari Royal Family to be exact.
And while that family was generous enough to loan the watch Patek Philippe Museum for several years, it hasn't been on display there in over a decade. The facts were shady,
Patek phillipes supercomplication over 18 months went by without any details — or any confirmation of who owned the watch and that they would sell it.
But, it turned out to be accurate at least the most expensive watch in the world would
Patek phillipes supercomplication sold — Patek Patek phillipes supercomplication supercomplication of course cannot disclose who is consigning it and on November 11,at 6 p.
The estimate this time? But what makes this watch so special, and why was I so thrilled to spend an afternoon with it at the Sotheby's New York office in August? Patek phillipes supercomplication, Patek Philippe No. Graves, had already had a storied history of very special commissions.
This enormous example of human ingenuity contains 24 different horological complications. And the watch was constructed over a period of seven years,
Patek phillipes supercomplication in Twenty four complications, with the work taking place the s, means that that timepiece was built entirely by hand, and all calculations Patek phillipes supercomplication the two dozen complications were done without the aid of a single computer.
That is absolutely mind-boggling. So what does it do, exactly? It sounds so simple when they put it that way, doesn't it? On one side seen above you have standard time, perpetual calendar display via apertures at 3: The double-registers at 2: On the side of the case there are several switches.
One of them turns the sonnerie on and off, the next switches it between a petite just the quarter, automatically and grand sonnerie hour and Patek phillipes supercomplication, automaticallyand a third turns the central alarm on and off. On the other side, you have the minute repeater slide. But the minute repeater on the Patek phillipes supercomplication Supercomplication is actually "Westminster chime.
The split-seconds chronograph is operated by the winding crown, and though the watch hasn't been serviced since seriouslyit operates flawlessly,
Patek phillipes supercomplication do the chiming and alarm mechanisms. Turn the watch over, and you'll see the Supercomplication's infamous sky chart, the inspiration Patek phillipes supercomplication oh so many of Patek's later watches. Around Patek phillipes supercomplication outside of the dial you'll see a hour display — this is sidereal time.
The two sub-registers off-center show the sunrise and sunset, while the central sub-register at 6 o'clock shows the equation of Patek phillipes supercomplication. Of course, the absolutely stunning sky chart, equation of time, sunrise and sunset are all calibrated specifically the New York City Patek phillipes supercomplication of Henry Graves Jr. Up top on Patek phillipes supercomplication second side of the Supercomplication?
The personalized dial saying Patek phillipes supercomplication whom this watch was built, exclusively, and by whom. It doesn't get much better than that. Actually, it absolutely doesn't get any better than Patek phillipes supercomplication. What I never understood about the Supercomplication until seeing it in the Patek phillipes supercomplication is Patek phillipes supercomplication how big it is, and how the dials essentially float above the Each dial, totally unrestored and featuring beautiful, mild patina, isn't set into the case at all.
They really sit above the case, and when the front close, they are
Patek phillipes supercomplication snuggly. It is actually through these little
Patek phillipes supercomplication between the dial the case that one can see the beating balance wheel, and even read the serial number of the watch.
Remember, in dual-sided watches, one must remove the hands, and the dial, to see the movement. This is obviously the riskiest part of any service, and Patek thought it was to place Patek phillipes supercomplication serial number in a position viewable without requiring anyone to remove anything. What cannot be conveyed to you via Patek phillipes supercomplication photographs, or anything I say, really, is the
Patek phillipes supercomplication impressiveness of this piece in the metal.
It is gigantic — over 70 mm in diameter and weighing over a solid pound — but it doesn't feel overgrown like many grand complication wristwatches.
This watch feels right, just the way that it is.
To see all the functions still work perfectly over 80 years after production, without the aid of computers, is truly Here it is in hand, to give you an of scale. I have to honest and say that seeing the Graves Supercomplication something of an emotional experience for me.
As a Patek phillipes supercomplication believer that the most impressive horological craftsmanship is behind us, this watch is truly the very pinnacle of what makes this hobby so much fun.
And while this giant pocket watch is anything but practical, it's amazing to think how many great Patek were made possible by the development of its 24 individual complications. This watch is truly the godfather to all complicated Pateks, and as I told you two and a half years ago when I bought a watch belonging to Mr.
Graves' grandsonI believe this family to be the most important family in the history of collecting. Above is a picture I just had to take. That's my Universal Geneve ca. At one point, these two watches were in the same household, and here they are reunited half a century later. So now that you understand little bit more the Henry Graves Supercomplication, we have to ask the eleven million dollar question: It's one that no one, and I mean no oneseems willing to answer.
So it sold for eleven inbut that number has proven to be untouchable since, even though pocket watches as a whole are a bit of a stale market.
I've spoken to friends Patek phillipes supercomplication the industry, collectors, and dealers, and no one really knows where to peg the Graves watch. But we're talking millions here, many of them. Who else could afford this much for a single watch, and one you cannot put on your wrist and take to dinner? Clearly the Patek Philippe Museum will be interested, and it could very well be their last chance to claim the watch as their own, so I expect them to push hard.
Patek phillipes supercomplication order for it to hit 15 million, Sotheby's will need at least one Patek phillipes supercomplication mega-buyer. It could easily happen, and this watch — arguably the end all trump card in the game of horological one-upmanship — could sell for even more.
We simply don't know because there is so little available information on collectors of this caliber. In the meantime, sit back and enjoy these live photos of the most important, most expensive timepiece ever made.
